Removal of Transport to Catholic Schools
You may not be aware that Kirklees Council are currently considering the removal of support for transport to those children living more than three miles away from their schools (2 miles for under 8s). Currently, these children receive a free bus pass as an acknowledgement of their right to attend a Catholic school. This ‘discretionary’ arrangement has been in place for many years and is a consequence of the 1944 Education Act that established the modern position of the Church in education. Children on free school meals are not financially affected by the proposal and would still have to be supported by the Council as they have a statutory duty to do so. However, all bus services for all children (paying or not) may be affected as the bus operators will only run buses that are financially viable.
To persuade Kirklees Councillors to ignore Officers recommendations and maintain the status quo, may not be easy. For the wellbeing of our families, we must try. It is difficult to see that the Council would be prepared to treat any other group in this way. We do hope that you will be able to help us by signing our petition. |
