Yorkshire Plate Final Winners

Yorkshire Plate Final Year 11 vs De Lacy

The opening exchanges between the two teams showed very little give from either side. De Lacy outmatched SJF for size whereas Fishers were showing themselves to be the faster, more agile side. This made for an exciting, albeit scoreless first half. Fishers had done the majority of defending in the first half but had remained resolute. Both teams had opportunities to score but defence was the winner. The second half from a Fishers point of view needed quicker play and moving the ball to wider areas.

The second half started with Fishers kicking to De Lacy. Following the first defensive set Fishers took control. Good handling and then fast feet saw J. Beevers break the line and outpace the opposition from the half way line. This was quickly converted to give Fishers a 6-0 lead. Shortly after J. Scriven dominated play to create an opening which was expertly finished in the corner by S. Hartley. Captain H. Copley converted again to give Fishers a 12-0 advantage.

The next 10-15 minutes saw Fishers with very little possession of the ball. Three unanswered tries from the large pack of De Lacey; two of which were converted, shifted momentum. With 6 minutes left on the clock Fishers were trailing 16-12. A well worked set, commitment and a never say die attitude started by A. Hirst and J. Mitchell saw S. Hartley complete for his second try in the corner. A difficult kick just went wide. Full time score 16-16.

This meant the game would be decided by a golden point. First to score wins. Fishers received the ball from kick off deep in their own half. Strong running, fast play and good handling put Fishers 30 m short of the try line. A quick play of the ball and sharp passing set up H. Copley for a long range drop goal which sailed between the sticks. Victory 17-16! A fantastic team performance
