MOMO Challenge

We have had a report today from Kirklees Safeguarding (and one of our parents) about the recent ‘Momo Challenge’ which has been seen by a number of children at home. The ‘Momo Challenge’ is an alleged form of cyberbullying that spreads through social media, online gaming and mobile phones. The menacing looking Momo doll character lurks behind apparently innocent-looking games in the hope that whilst a parent’s attention is distracted, it can appear and encourage children to take part in dangerous dares, and even acts of self-harm. The character tells the user it’s a secret and they are not to reveal anything to their parents or 'bad things might happen'. Children can be asked for their details and different variations are now circulating.

There have been reports of this dangerous Momo character popping up on devices such as Xbox, Playstation, mobile phones and iPads with a wide range of apps and apparently ‘safe’ games being affected together with Youtube. However, it is extremely important to be vigilant of all forms of technology in order to safeguard your children. Our advice is always to supervise the games your children play and be extremely mindful of what they are doing online. Also, ensure the devices they have access to are restricted to age suitable content.
